Clubs and Activities

AP Biology
This program involves advanced placement study in Biology. In this program students learn first year Biology curriculum for university. They acquire advance knowledge and and learning techniques with problem solving skills in Biology that will help them succeed in university. This occurs after school two days a week with specific topics covered each week, for the whole year. In May there is an AP exam that they may take if they so wish (cost involved). Passing this exam with a high mark can grant them a first year credit at a university

Anime Club
This club is open to all students interested in Anime at GSS. Students meet once a week, after school to view Anime videos, share ideas, and draw in the Anime style. They discuss plots and the characters of different Anime series and movies that they have seen. There is also time for drawing workshops, games, and cozplay where members of the group dress up as their favourite Anime characters. So if you are really into Anime, this is the club for you!

Art Club
The Art Club is open to all students who are interested in Art at GSS. The students meet once a week to create art pieces that vary from drawing, painting, printmaking, and sculpture. There are often tutorials where new media and techniques are shared by the group members. The students will work on individual projects of their choice or the club may work on group projects like murals, stained glass panels, and designs for posters. So if you are creative, like to explore art styles, and want to express your inner artist, this is the club for you!

Breakfast Club
Breakfast Club runs from 8:10 - 8:45 a.m. every day in Room 305 (the upstairs Family Studies room).  This initiative is supported by Niagara Nutrition Partners and businesses in the community.  Everyone who wishes can start the day with a nutritious breakfast.  Donations are always needed.  There is no charge.  Everyone is welcome.

Chess Club
Chess club is a year round activity, involving both boys and girls.  The Chess Club takes place before school and at lunch, and is usually run out of the library.  Senior and junior students have between 5-7 tournaments a year (team and singles) that are both in school and away.  A great way to meet people, keep sharp and have fun. 

Computer Programming Club
The Computer Programming Club competes in several individual and team programming contests each year.  It is a time for students who have an interest in computer programming to share ideas and sharpen their skills.

Drama
GSS Drama features a fun and physical theatre program with lots of opportunities to get involved during and after school. Our twice a year evening Cabarets feature the best of student work. Our Improv Teams competes in various tournaments and has performed in Ottawa at the National Arts Centre as part of the National Improv Finals for several years. Our Sears Drama Festival Show is a one act where students and teachers combine their creative powers to put on an original show. We’ve won at the local level for 15 years running and we’re still going strong. Check us out at www.grimsbydrama.com and join us!

Ecoclub
Come and join us every Thursday morning in Room 304.  If you are passionate about the environment and have a desire to reduce the ecological impact of our school as well as helping us build an environmentally responsible community…then…we NEED YOU AND YOUR IDEAS!  Please speak to Miss Kozak for further details.

Positive Spaces Alliance
Formerly known as the Gay Straight Alliance, the Positive Space Project is a group that meets on a weekly basis to promote acceptance of yourself, those around you and ultimately loving who you are. As well as touching upon LGBTQ topics and issues, we will also be discussing mental health awareness, anti-bullying, suicide awareness and how to truly understand that you’re not alone.

Improv Team
Impulse. Teamwork. Trust. Risk and more than a few laughs…Improvisation continues to thrive at GSS! For 15 years now, GSS has competed in the Canadian Improv Games – a coast to coast tournament the likes of which you’ll not find anywhere else. A Competitive team is put together through auditions in early fall. Often, the talent pool is so vast that a Development team is also created. Think this is for you? If your gut tells you that, listen to it and we’ll see you on the stage next fall.

Me to We
Me to We Club is for any student who wishes to make a change in the world. It promotes social responsibility by taking part in events and activities that make the world around us a better place. We are always looking for new members to join us, come join us and feel great about making positive changes!

Music at GSS
The Music Department offers a wide variety of ensembles for all levels of ability.  Whether you are an instrumentalist or vocalist, we hope you will be involved in one or more of our extra-curricular groups.  Students from the entire student body are welcome to participate.  Annual events include a Christmas and Spring Concert, as well as participation in provincial music festivals.

Concert Bands
GSS is proud to offer our students the opportunity to play in our senior and junior concert bands.  Senior band is the largest band in our school and regularly competes in competitions ranging from the regional to national levels of Music fest Canada, while the Junior Band ir oriented towards Grade nine and tens looking for a challenge.

Concert Choir
The concert choir is a group open to anyone who has an interest in singing.  Repertoire for the Concert Choir consists of a wide variety of genres from classical to popular. No matter what type of music you like there will be something for you to enjoy in this group. The modern and classical selections will improve vocal skills

Jazz Bands
Our jazz bands allow for enrichment for students with experience on jazz instruments. These bands will nurture the stylistic and rhythmical nuances of jazz in our students and provide a unique experience different from the concert band experience.

Percussio Ensemble
Whether you’re interested in discovering percussion or you’re an experienced player of the genre, we offer a variety of percussion instruments including keyboard. The Percussion Ensemble performs a variety of genres and will introduce students to new musical experiences.

Recycling Group
Being environmentally conscious has never been more important. By increasing recycling and implementing other waste reduction strategies, students and schools across the DSBN have made the environment an important priority.  Students take a leadership role to promote the idea of making our world a better place.

Relay for Life
GSS has a very proud recent history as a school participant in the Canadian Cancer Society’s Relay for Life campaign. Since our first event in 2005, GSS has had a Relay for Life every second year, most recently in June of 2015. All told we have raised just shy of $500,000! This event involves the entire school – students from all grades, teachers, administrators, caretakers as well as the entire community come together for a most amazing night of awareness and fundraising.

School Reach
Reach is a Canada Wide competition that is modelled after the trivia game show “Reach for the Top”.  Students compete in teams of 4 to see which team can be fastest on the buzzer and answer the most questions correctly. Questions are based on facts you are learning in your classes, current events, and general knowledge trivia. We have a Junior team for Grade 9’s and 10’s and a Senior team for Grade 11’s and 12’s. Everyone is welcome, whether you think you know a lot or not.  You may be surprised -  and you’ll definitely have fun!

Ski and Snowboard Club
This club is recreational in nature and allows students the opportunity to participate in co-instructional, co-educational activity with both peers and adults from the community.  A day trip and evening skiing/ snowboarding are possible.  Ontario/US resorts are the destination of choice and all safety equipment and lessons are mandatory. Ski club skis dates for 2017  Kissing bridge are to be  Feb 2,  Feb 9, Feb 16 feb 23 and March 2.

Students Aware!  Because We Care!  Terry Fox Walk.  Impact Conference.  National Anti-Bullying Week.  MADD.  Adopt-A-Family for GBF.  Kids' Help Phone.  Silver Wishes.  Bowling for Big Brothers/Sisters.  Beyond the Hurt Leadership Training.  Project “I am. (out)standing”.  Hike for Hospice/McNally House.  “Go To Teachers”.  BBQs. We are committed to creating awareness for those within our community who need our support the most.  We meet Friday mornings.  ALL students are welcome! Our town.  Our school.  Because We Care!  Students Aware!!!

Writer's Club
Creativity is unleashed at the writer's club.  Students can share their written creations and even read the works of others.  Whether it is poetry, writing or another creative endeavour, the writer's club is open to all students.  The writer's club meets once a week after school. Open year round.

Table Tennis
Come and join us over lunchtime on Thursdays in the lower gym for some friendly competition. See Miss Kozak for details.

Yearbook
Do you like working with cameras? Do you enjoy working with the latest Photoshop programs? Are you a creative person? Do you enjoy working as a team with fun and energetic people? If you answered yes to one or all of the above questions, than the Grimsby Yearbook Club can be the right fit for you. You will work in a high-paced and creative environment, learning skills that will carry over into your life outside of high school. Some of the skills you will gain are in the field of journalism, illustration, graphic design, photography, and advertising. So, if you feel like joining a winning team, look no further than the Grimsby Yearbook team.
